We chose some difficult medical words and put our clever Australian Paramedical College (APC) students to the test.

What is ‘Medical Terminology’?

Medical terminology is the vocabulary that medical professionals use to describe the body, what it does, and the treatments they prescribe.

Why not try and pronounce them yourself (before watching the video!):

• Borborygmus – a rumbling or gurgling noise made by the movement of fluid and gas in the intestines
• Pathophysiology – the study of abnormal changes in body functions
• Hyperkalaemia – high potassium levels in the blood
• Abdominal Aortic Aneurism – a bulge in the aorta at the level of the abdomen
• Diaphoretic – excessive sweating in relation to your environment and activity level
• Sphenopalatine Ganglioneuralgia – Unpleasant feeling commonly referred to as brain freeze

Medical Terminology is based on Latin or Greek words, which means learning it is like learning a whole new language – but as you can see from the video, it can be lots of fun to learn!

You may have noticed our students try to break down the words to figure out the meaning, because sometimes knowing part of the word helps to figure out the meaning of the entire word.
