Once the eligibility requirements have been met – Step (A), there are essentially two pathways to becoming a paramedic with Ambulance Victoria. We have detailed these two pathways for you below so that all you need to do is determine which option is best suited to your situation.

Become a Graduate Ambulance Paramedic with Ambulance Victoria

In order to apply with Ambulance Victoria as a Graduate Ambulance Paramedic, you must have completed or in your final year of study with a recognised ambulance qualification at an Australian or New Zealand University.

Employment Pre-requisites

To be eligible to work as an Ambulance Paramedic for Ambulance Victoria, you definitely need a Bachelor in Paramedic Science degree. This is the proposed standard for all newly qualified paramedics, with most Ambulance Services adopting this policy.

There are still many paramedics working for Ambulance Victoria, who only hold a Diploma of Paramedical Science. However, newly qualified paramedics must possess a Bachelor in Paramedic Science.

One of the most popular pathways is to complete the HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science in your spare time, then go to university to complete the degree. The benefits to this are, you can keep in working in your current job and keep on earning, there’s no interruption to your existing lifestyle and when you get to the end of the Diploma, you will be ready to apply to university.

Just about every university will offer you some credits towards your degree because you already hold the Diploma. Every university is different of course; therefore it is always wise to make enquiries first, just to make sure. Whichever pathway you choose, to work for Ambulance Victoria, you will need a Bachelor in Paramedic Science.

Should you become successful in becoming a paramedic with Ambulance Victoria, you will begin working under the supervision of a clinical instructor.
