Bridging Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand for the first time, Australian Paramedical College (APC) is proud to collaborate with Hato Hone St John as a Clinical Placement Partner as of 1st May 2024. We are thrilled to share what this means for our current and future students who reside in both countries as our organisations come together to create new international opportunities for our wonderful community.
Firstly, this partnership sees Hato Hone St John offering APC’s HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care students Clinical Placement opportunities through their selected branches in New Zealand. Further to this, Diploma graduates now have the opportunity to secure employment as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with Hato Hone St John, earning a dual-country qualification in the process.
Hato Hone St John is New Zealands primary ambulance service, in operation since 1885 and treating more than 460,500 individuals annually*.
Part of the Order of St John, Hato Hone St John are one of the 44 countries worldwide who offer firt aid and training, promoting health and well-being for the better of the community. Being on the frontline of medical response for Aotearoa communities, individuals who work and volunteer are driven by the passion of caring for others.
Hato Hone St John have a diverse workforce delivering the emergency ambulance service to over 90% of Aotearoa New Zealand and see full-time staff and volunteers alike throughout the motu (country). Hato Hone St John also deliver a robust Patient Transfer Service and support at many events throughout Aotearoa.

The partnership between APC and Hato Hone St John is driven by the ultimate goal of providing better healthcare for everyone. This means making quality education, hands-on training and employment opportunities more accessible to those wanting to start a career in prehospital healthcare in Australia and New Zealand – which is exactly what our collaboration helps facilitate for our students.
Multi-faceted in its own right, this partnership doesn’t just benefit those residing within Australia. It also comes with opportunities for New Zealand residents to enrol to APC by enrolling on our HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care.

Read on to understand what Clinical Placement and employment opportunities are available for APC students as part of this collaboration, as well as the eligibility criteria is for Australian and New Zealand citizens.
For the first time since our inception, APC are excited to share direct international Clinical Placement pathways for students to apply for.
APC’s HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care students have the chance to conduct their Clinical Placement with Hato Hone St John to further their clinical skillset, and vice versa for those residing within New Zealand for Australian Clinical Placement opportunities through any of APC’s Industry Partners.
Clinical Placement can be offered to students, allowing graduates to plan their trip overseas in line with their course requirements, whilst delving into New Zealand’s culture and scenery on their off days.*
This Clinical Placement can be used as a ‘taster’ for students before delving fully into the experience and applying for employment at a later date.
*Please be advised that this opportunity is self-funded and not included within course tuition fees. Rostering fees will be billed directly to a student.
To further the growth opportunities, if you’re located in Australia and wish to gain employment through Hato Hone St John – the great news is it’s an easy process!
To begin, you must be enrolled in the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care and have graduated in the last 2-years, or expect to graduate before April 2024.
Alongside the Diploma, individuals are required to hold a full Australian driver’s license, with the ability to convert to a New Zealand driver’s license within 3 months of employment. To understand employment medical standards, click here.
Should your application be approved, students will be taken through a 2-week program and local orientation implemented by Hato Hone St John and designed in collaboration with APC too. Once completed, applicants will become qualified as Hato Hone St John Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
If you are a New Zealand resident looking to gain employment with Hato Hone St John, the same process applies that Australian residents follow. To confirm, this means you must be enrolled in the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care and complete the same pre-check processes to apply.
For the practical aspect of your studies, APC invites you to attend our sunny QLD headquarters located in Burleigh Heads, or any of our other locations in WA, VIC and NSW. In doing so, you’re welcome to stay for the placement aspect of your studies through any of APC’s Industry Partners, or head back home and conduct your placement through your local Hato Hone branch.

APC offers nationally accredited training through our HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care, HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care and HLT31120 – Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport however please note that this employment option outlined above with Hato Hone St John is only available to those studying the Diploma.
