HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science

Develop a career in pre-hospital emergency health care or continue your studies at university

Know your facts

Before we show you what to expect from this course, we’d like to reveal a few facts to help you make a decision about which pathway is right for you.

The HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science is a Nationally Recognised qualification and is accepted in every State of Australia; and is also highly valued in the UK and across the world.

> The Diploma will educate you to the highest level before entry into university.

> This Diploma will NOT allow you to apply for jobs as an Ambulance Paramedic or Rescue Paramedic. You will need at minimum a Bachelor in Paramedic Science degree for that. A Rescue Paramedic requires additional study and many years of clinical specialisation.

> This Diploma DOES thoroughly prepare graduates for entry into university to study a Bachelor in Paramedic Science which in turn provides the pathway into State Ambulance Paramedic jobs. Graduates of the College have enjoyed an easier transition into university because of the underpinning knowledge of paramedic practice they possess. Choosing this pathway has resulted in course credits being awarded and in some cases a reduction in course fees.

> With this Diploma you can develop a career as a Medic/Paramedic/First Responder in mining, offshore on rigs and ships, events, concerts, sporting events (motor racing, footy, rugby, tennis, cycling, equine etc), public and community events (Basic Life Support Medic) and a host of local and international volunteering roles.

About this Diploma

The HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science is a Nationally Recognised and highly-respected qualification for those who wish to pursue a career in the private, pre-hospital emergency health care sector. It is fully endorsed by the Australian government and recognised in every State of Australia. The Diploma is also highly regarded in the UK as well as other Commonwealth countries. The appeal of overseas travel and the opportunity to gain invaluable experience with the London Ambulance Service for  instance is a good move if you have the passion and ability to travel.

Private sector jobs for Diploma graduates

Private company Medics and Paramedics enjoy the freedom to work across many industries and provide good opportunities for career development. Not everyone has the means or time to go to university for another 2-3 years, they want to gain the qualifications and start working as soon as possible. This is why the private sector is so inviting for new graduates. There are many positions for patient transport attendants who have been trained to Diploma level. Patient transport is a rapidly developing sector.

Course overview

This qualification is made up of 17 units of competency.

The course curriculum has been designed in such a way as to allow students the flexibility to gain the underpinning knowledge by accessing a full library of online learning materials through a purpose-built platform. The format is easy to follow with plenty of help and support if you need it.

Getting Started

Once enrolled, you work through the first 10 subjects exclusively online, which could take approx 8-12 months. Each subject has its own set of learner guides and materials; complete with assessments which can be completed on or off-line. Even though this is an online course, students can download and print the learning resources.

For some students, paper-based materials are the perfect way to learn, whilst for others, the appeal of learning on an iPAD or laptop is what works best for them.

Once the first 10 subjects have been successfully completed (8-12 months), it’s time to attend the first clinical workshop, where you get to put into practice, the theory you have learned. Clinical Workshop 1 is held over 7 days at locations in QLD, NSW and VIC.

After Clinical Workshop 1 is completed, it’s time to go out and complete your clinical placement, working alongside emergency medical response companies. Think of this as work experience, where you will partner with an organisation and be given the opportunity to work in patient transport, be a trainee event medic or a first responder at a large sporting event – all the while being carefully supervised by your mentor. The College assists students to find organisations in their respective location.

Next, it’s time to study one of the most comprehensive and hands-on subjects – HLTAMB008 – Assess and Deliver Standard Clinical Care. This subject covers the advanced clinical skill sets. Allow up to 3 months of study to thoroughly prepare for this intensive yet inspiring hands-on workshop.

Attend Clinical Workshop 2. Attend the clinical campus, you’ll take part in simulated real-life medical emergency scenarios and experience first-hand how to use specialised medical equipment, drive an ambulance, load and unload patients, complete the final practical assessments and so much more.

After completing Workshop 2, it’s back out into the community to complete your final 80 hours of clinical experience.

The remaining 5 subjects can be completed in your own time online (3-6 months)
**Note: There is a 2 year window to complete the full qualification.
