What is an Event Medic
Alan Hawke, APC Diploma Graduate
Changing Lives Podcast
Alan Hawke, Australian Paramedical College graduate, talks about his work as an Event Medic in South Australia.
Covering events such as horse racing, Garden of Unearthly Delights and Motor sports events; these types of gathering draws big crowds who can be prone to injuries requiring on-site medical teams to be ready for anything.
As an Event Medic, Alan and his team responded to initial incidents and made an effort to take some of the work load off the South Australian Ambulance Service. The team are referred to as first responders to an accident or emergency, requiring swift action to stabilise the patient. They will try treat all incidents as best the can, given the scope of practice they are permitted to work within; and if patient transportation to hospital is required, they will call for Paramedics to attend.
Being an Event Medic is completely different to being an on-road medic/Paramedic. It requires you to be resourceful and think outside of the box; to be able to treat the patients and provide the best possible clinical care.
