Our Guest Lecturers

Dr Michael Eburn, PhD

Dr. Michael Eburn is an independent researcher and writer specialising in law, emergency management, and emergency healthcare. He runs the ‘Australian Emergency Law‘ website and is an Honorary Fellow of the Australasian College of Paramedicine.

Overview of career to date

Michael’s passion for emergency management began at 13 with St John Ambulance. He later served with NSW Ambulance, St John Ambulance, NSW SES, ACT Ambulance, and NSW Marine Rescue. As a lawyer, he worked in private practice and NSW Health, before becoming an academic and finishing as an Associate Professor at ANU in 2019.

Current qualifications

  • Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales
  • Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of New England
  • Master of Laws and Master of Professonal Education and Training from the University of Newcastle and Deakin University respectively
  • PhD in Law from Monash University
  • HLT31120 – Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport from Australian Paramedical College

Previous teachings

Michael’s teachings at the college are vast, encompassing topics such as ‘Negligence and the Duty of Care‘, ‘The Law of Consent‘, ‘Legality Around Patient Care Records‘, ‘Professional Practice‘ and more. 

Dr Alana Westover, PhD

Dr. Alana Westover is a Teaching Associate at Monash University, teaching paramedicine, nursing, and health sciences. She also worked as a Postdoctoral Scientist at the Hudson Institute, researching cellular and molecular pathways affecting respiratory physiology.

Overview of career to date

Alana started with an Arts/Science degree at Monash University, but her passion for biology led her to pursue a PhD in physiology, focusing on improving lung function in preterm babies. Inspired by the practical impact of her research, she transitioned to teaching, briefly in high schools before finding her niche in undergraduate human physiology education.

Current qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science with Honours in Pharmacology from Monash University
  • PhD in Physiology, focused on fetal pulmonary response to intrauterine inflammation, from Monash University
  • Master’s in Teaching, specialising in secondary education (science and humanities) from Victoria University

Previous teachings

Alana has spent time specialising in teaching APC students enrolled in the unit of theory HLTAAP002 – Confirm Physical Health Status.

  • Registered Paramedic with 10+ years as an Advanced Life Support Paramedic in Victoria
  • 7 years working as a University Lecturer teaching the Bachelor of Paramedicine programs
  • One of the first Paramedics in the world to earn his PhD in Paramedicine, focusing on paramedic response to family violence. Presenting his research and providing training across the world.

  • 2 years’ experience working for private paramedic companies.
  • Volunteered in Tanzania completing health checks on school children.

  • Over 22 years of experience in healthcare, specialising in emergency and non-emergency healthcare throughout Australia.
  • Has studied Paramedicine, Nursing and Midwifery at universities across Australia. She also holds an Advanced Diploma, completed while working for QAS.
  • Born in New Zealand, loves to 4WD,  spend time with family and is a mother to two teenage boys.

  • Retired detective in the Police force.
