Mining Paramedic qualifications – What do I need?

A Mining Paramedic works in a fast-paced and unpredictable environment where every day is different. 

There have been multiple job vacancies become available in the mining industry recently, so many of our students are asking how and where they are able to get appropriate qualifications to become an Emergency Services Officer (ESO) or medic in the mines…We have the answer!

To work as a Mining Paramedic there are two main qualifications employers will ask for on top of the obvious Paramedical qualification (Diploma of Emergency Health Care or Bachelor Paramedical Science). These include:

• Cert III Mines Rescue – This qualification is for response and rescue team members who work in a mine site or a construction site.
• Standard 11 Mining Induction Course – To work on any mine site you will typically require this qualification which gives you an introduction to mining, safety, procedures and legislation.

In addition to this, depending on the mine site and their requirements, you may also require:

• Coal Board Medical – If you are working on a Coal Mine this is a mandatory medical assessment as required by the Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme.
• Cert IV Training and Assessment  – Mining Paramedics are often required to hold this certification so they are able to train miners in various health and safety areas.
• Operate Light Vehicle and 4WD – Safety being priority on all mine sites, Mining & Resource focused training in the safe operation of a light vehicle is essential to combat the adverse off-road conditions and variety of terrain you will face on a daily basis.
• Drug and Alcohol Screening Qualification – This course allows Paramedics to be the on site drug and alcohol testing collectors
• Current Manual Drivers Licence

Why do I need these qualifications?

Working as a Paramedic in the mines will see you perform many roles outside of your existing skillset. As the on-site Medic, you will be responsible for all on-site medical services from First Aid cases to acute trauma care. You will also work closely with health and safety professionals to contribute to the ongoing preventative and proactive health and safety strategies to continue to reduce non-work and work-related injuries and illnesses. You may also be responsible for on-site Alcohol and Drug testing as well as Hydration monitoring.

With the news of coal prices heading skyward and mines reopening around Australia, there are a whole host of jobs hitting the market. If you head over to any job board and search for “Emergency Services Officer” you will be able to see what Paramedical jobs are currently available.
