What is Paramedic career progression?

Becoming a qualified and registetred Paramedic is an excellent goal, however, many of our students ask about career progression within the different Ambulance Services. They want to know where their career can take them and which qualifications they need along the way.

Using the Queensland Ambulance Service as an example, there are a multitude of training programs, activities and assessments to ensure every paramedic keeps their skills current. Paramedic career progression is therefore by way of either the acquisition of additional skills and education, or through successful application for a higher level position.

The Paramedic rank structure within the Queensland Ambulance Service is as follows:

  • Student Paramedic
  • Ambulance Paramedic
  • Advanced Care Paramedic
  • Intensive Care Paramedic
  • Officer in Charge, Station Officer Level 1-4
  • Operations Supervisor
  • Director of Operations /Executive Manager Operations (depending on the LASN)
