Although this role is for qualified and experienced Paramedics, it once gain serves as a blueprint and a guide to a diversified career as a rescue/paramedic.

As you would expect with this level of responsibility, there are mandatory requirements that must be met. If you only hold a Diploma of Paramedical Science, then this role is out of reach for the moment. However, read through the list of requirements to get an idea of what is expected and which courses you need to do.

Part of your job as an Emergency Services Officer and Rescue/Paramedic, is also to train and educate workers on the site in Workplace Health and Safety. For this, you’ll be expected to have attained the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE 40116) qualification. This can be completed in the workplace and is mostly studied online, with workplace activities and assessments.

Working in a open-cut, surface mining environment means at this level, you’ll be expected to multi-skilled in many areas of competence; and this particular job really highlights the diversity of the role. You’ll be expected to drive a heavy rigid truck, be competent in 4 Wheel Driving, know how to use breathing apparatus, be skilled in CPR and first aid as well as hold qualifications in advanced clinical patient care. There may seem a lot of requirements for these roles, and that’s very true. However, the opportunities to work anywhere in the world are the appeal of the job. Not forgetting the big pay packets for working remotely.

The sample items below are part of a qualification called the Certificate III in Mine Emergency Response and Rescue. Go to training.gov.au to find out more about what’s contained in this mines rescue training package.

  • undertake vertical rescue – PUASAR032

This role means you will be working on Queensland mine sites and as such you need the Standard 11 – generic coal induction. Find out more about the Standard 11 mining induction courses here.

Standard 11 covers the essential risk management, safety, first aid and communication in the workplace. Average cost of the Standard 11 is approximately $660 and can be completed in 2 days face-to-face.

Hazard ID, control and risk assessment and in a mining environment.
RIIERR302D – Respond to Local Emergencies and incidents
Prepare and respond to emergencies in a mine environment.
RIIGOV201D – Comply with Site Work Processes / Procedures
Access and apply site safety procedures, apply personal safety measures, maintain personal well-being, and complete relevant reports and forms.
RIIWHS201D – Work Safely and Follow WHS Policies and Procedures (Requires sign off )
Working safely and follow WHS policies and procedures, accessing and apply site safety procedures; applying personal safety measures and operational safety measures; maintaining personal well being for job; and identifying and reporting incidents.
RIIERR205D – Apply Initial Response First Aid
Assess the situation, apply basic first aid and complete incident reports.
RIICOM201D – Communicate in the Workplace

To be considered for Rescue Paramedic and Paramedic roles, you must hold the following skills/qualifications:

  • Sound administration, Microsoft Office, computer and database management skills (mandatory for all sites)
  • Must have applied for AHPRA registration – No Conditions (mandatory for all sites)
  • Diploma of Paramedical Science/Bachelor of Paramedical Science (Ambulance) (mandatory for all sites)
  • Up to date Tetanus and Hep A&B vaccination/immunisation (mandatory for all sites)
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) or ACLS (employee responsible to obtain at their own expense within 3 months of commencement) (mandatory for all sites)
  • Operate and maintain a 4WD and light vehicle certificate (mandatory for all sites)
  • QLD manual drivers’ licence (mandatory for all sites)
  • Coal Board Medical with mines rescue (mandatory for all sites)
  • Drug and Alcohol Testing certificate – HLTPAT005 (mandatory for all sites)

Certificate III in Mine Emergency Response and Rescue inclusive of the following: (mandatory for some sites)

  • undertake road crash rescue – PUASAR024
  • undertake confined space rescue – PUASAR025
  • undertake vertical rescue – PUASAR032
  • operate breathing apparatus open circuit – PUAFIR207

About the Registered Paramedics & Rescue Paramedics job.
