Should I become a Paramedic? 4 things you need to know

We often have people calling us, asking “should I become a paramedic,” and if we think they would be suited to the job. To help you all out, we thought we would create a quiz to help guide you to your answer.

  1. Nature of the work
Paramedics care for the sick or injured in emergency medical settings. After being dispatched by 000, their quick reaction and competence under pressure is vital to ensuring a positive outcome. In addition to emergency calls, they also provide medical services and transport patients to medical facilities.
  2. Training / Education
The HLT41120 – Certificate IV in Health Care is the entry-level pre-hospital emergency care training course. Once completed, this nationally recognised qualification means you will be qualified to provide pre-hospital and out-of-hospital emergency health care response, as well as deliver patient assessment to those who require urgent medical attention. You may then continue on to complete the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care which can be used to have a career as a paramedic/medic in the private sector or continue onto University to study a Bachelor of Paramedic Science.
  3. Employment
As with every training course completed, there are no guarantees of employment, however, we have collated a list of careers in the private sector for consideration. The private company medics enjoy the freedom to work across many industry sectors, including mining, oil & gas, construction, sports, public events, maritime, aviation and exploration. If you continue on to complete a Bachelor Degree then you will be able to work with a State Ambulance Service.
  4. Earnings
As an example, Queensland paramedic salaries are some of the best in the country when compared to other state ambulance services. It is also on par with private health service companies for paramedic positions state wide.
