Student Interview Paramedical Diploma – Sarah Robertson

An Interview with Paramedical Diploma Student Sarah Robertson.

To summarise Sarah’s thoughts on study and her future pathway;

  • “We’re really having a good time getting to know the other students”
  • “My background is in veterinary nursing”
  • “The trainers are amazing, you get a lot of support through the staff here at APC as well”
  • “It’s really nice just tying in all of that theory work and putting it into practice through practical work”
  • “Emails come back really quickly [from our trainers] with responses”
  • “I might start training first aid and then eventually become a paramedic”
  • “If you’ve ever thought about doing it, it’s definitely worth it”

Meet APC Diploma student Sarah Robertson from Brisbane, who has been a veterinary nurse for 12 years, although now she has an interest in also helping humans.

In Sarah’s own words…

“My name is Sarah and I’m doing the Diploma of Paramedical Science through the Australian Paramedical College.”

“My background is in veterinary nursing, so I’ve been a vet nurse for about 12 years. I started straight out of school. I do have a little bit of medical background knowledge, but of course in the animal sense, not the human sense.”

“Essentially, the anatomy is much the same because we’re all mammals. It just happens to be that they’re on all fours and we’re standing up.”

“The main difference probably between doing CPR on an animal compared to a human is that positioning. So, I find that with humans, they have to be on their back, arms down, legs out. With animals, they actually have to be on their side.”

“So we’ve done workshop one this time last year. We’re starting with workshop two which is basically building on all of the skills that we’ve already learned. It’s going fantastically.”

“The trainers are amazing. We’re really having a good time getting to know the other students as well and it’s really nice just tying in all of that theory work and putting it into practice through practical work.”

“I’m actually doing the Diploma of Paramedical Science in the hope that I might start training first aid and then eventually become a paramedic.” – The diploma has been fantastic because it means that you are studying externally. There’s a lot of flexibility with people that have families and other commitments. You can put as much time into it as you can.

The trainers are fantastic. You get a lot of support through the staff here at APC as well, so everyone’s on the phone if you ever need them”

“Emails come back really quickly with responses and it’s just, yeah, it’s just definitely worth giving a go. If you’ve ever thought about doing it, it’s definitely worth it.”
