Meet APC Student Vickie Watts – Mining ESO (Medic) in Queensland
A talk with mature-age paramedical student Vickie Watts on her experience studying through APC.
To summarise Vickie’s thoughts on her study journey through APC:
- “I felt I needed to learn more of about how the body worked, particularly in my field of my career path”
- “You’re on your own a lot, but there was always APC to help”
- “It didn’t matter where you were, what you were doing, you could call them if you had a problem”
- “There was lots of funny times and I giggled a lot, which enhanced my learning experience”
- “We’re all the same at APC. Don’t go anywhere else if you need a Diploma”
Meet one of our very own APC students Vickie Watts! Vickie lives in beautiful Whitsunday region of Northern Queensland which is close to where she works; a major coal mining area called the Bowen Basin.
Vikki describes in here own words how she came to study with Australian Paramedical College.
“The reason I chose the Diploma of Paramedical Science (superseded by HLT51020 – Diploma fo Emergency Health Care) is because I felt I needed to learn more of about how the body worked, particularly in my field of my career path (Medical Emergency Service Officer in mining) that I’d chosen.”
“I work in a rural setting and I’m kind of remote and even in my job in the Bowen Basin, in mining, you’re on your own a lot, but there was always APC to help.”
“You could always call, it didn’t matter where you were, what you were doing, you could call them if you had a problem. If anyone out there thinks you may be dumb, you’re not dumb.”
“They (APC) don’t make you feel like you’re a dummy. They make you feel very special. In fact… I didn’t even have a lot of computer skills being a mature aged student.”
“We didn’t have those back then, so learning how to navigate (online learning) portals and this and that and the other was probably the hardest for me; but I could just call APC; just call them and they put you straight on the right track.”
“There was lots of stories from the trainers and there was lots of funny times and I giggled a lot, which enhanced my learning experience.”
“I was able to then relate to certain scenarios and equipment and what we were doing because you were giggling; and there was some serious stuff too.”
“We had to then knuckle down and do some work, but at the end of the day, you are able to do it with laughter, enjoyment.”
“Yeah. It was really, really good, We’ve all got two arms, two legs and heartbeat. We’re all the same at APC. Don’t go anywhere else if you need a Diploma (of Paramedical Science), stay with APC.”
Regardless of your age and learning abilities, APC will make you feel supported throughout your entire training and careers well after. Online learning, blended with clinical face-to-face workshops make this type of study very appealing if you’re looking to work towards a career change without giving up your current work/family activities.
